A MESSAGE TO THE ACADEMY A row of individuals sit at a long table in clear and even intervals. A stooped and glowing individual in a yellow buttoned down shirt stands turned towards two images on a wall. The SPEAKER IN YELLOW gestures towards the images with one arm and turns to speak to a somewhat agitated CROWD. SPEAKER IN YELLOW: Please settle down now (nods to long table) and take a look at this diagram. (Pointing to an unevenly drawn image of a marine brachyuran crab pinned next to a detailed photograph of the same species showing a view of the rounded, spotted carapace and claws with dark brown tips.) |
You must be wondering why I have chosen this unevenly drawn diagram of a Cancer Borealis, or Jonah Crab, as an exoskeleton illustration, when we all know, that crustaceans, when found in nature, display nearly perfect bilateral-symmetry to the human eye. Now esteemed colleagues (turns toward crowd), I am sure you are wondering, what exactly do I mean by “nature”? Could I be implying that a natural thing is more earthly? Closer to basic? Closer to dirt? (nods to long table, lingering a moment, turns back to CROWD) Or perhaps I am suggesting “a natural thing” is a thing less corrupted by human “civilization”? (raises eyebrows) Well, you must be wondering, what is not!?! And furthermore, what is not corrupted by the civilization of crabs? (CROWD rustles, murmurs) Excellent question! What can, how much, who can, and for how long survive without crabs? (CROWD becomes more agitated, those seated at long table stare ahead or fiddle with paper and PLASTIC ARTHROPODS) |
This my friends, is not a loaded question, but a query into systems and the nature of time itself. How does time unfold…. (nods to long table, CROWD is still)
Well, let us pause here and ask ourselves: why get to the bottom of it!? You’ll just have to continue giving panels like this and I swear and I will tell you honestly now, I never wanted to be an academic! It was a method of survival… well, I must admit the allure of intellectual freedom has been a rather exciting candy all these years… |
… but the production behind the sugar is one of stolen land and invisibilized labor.. And the dye causes cancer…!
And on that saccharin note, I leave the panel with one last question:
WHY BLAME THE PANGOLIN?
